2, 2007: The
opening ceremony for Anguilla Carnival 2007 was a breath a
fresh air. It's just what was needed for the capacity crowd
that gathered at the Landsome Bowl Cultural Center on
Wednesday evening to welcome in Anguilla's biggest festival.
Governor and Mrs. Andrew George, Minister of Finance Victor
Banks and Minister of Social Services Evans McNeil were
among the dignitaries on hand to join in the celebrations.
The evening was hosted by Dr. Linda Banks and "Numsy", a
local comedian who helped to fill the evening with laughter
and celebration. The Carnival committee should be
congratulated for their success in creating an opening event
which was truly family friendly and encompassed all the
treasured aspects of Anguilla Carnival.
Speeches
given by organizers, police commissioner and government
ministers were welcoming and firm in the request for a
peaceful and enjoyable Festival 2007. Commissioner
Benjamin's address included witty excerpts of recent calypso
commentary to highlight special points of concern. Further
emphasizing the importance of the messages and commentary on
current issues that calypsonians contribute during this
festival season. He emphasized the high level of security
that will accompany the events and the low level of
tolerance for any acts of violence. The commissioner made
known that the street events will be videotaped and that
cameras to assist his forces were being mounted in Sandy
Ground for some of the events in that area.
